Why do you think some people are so dead set against the government running things like schools and health care?

The nice thing about democracy is that you're free to vote, lobby, and demonstrate for whatever kind of healthcare, education, or national defense you want (including privatizing any or all of the above :-). Also, in a democracy, public schools won't actually brainwash your kids into blindly accepting the government's position, nor is a public health provider likely to give you a fatal overdose just because you're a dissident of some kind.

But the foundation of democracy is the rule of law, and when the government can claim a citizen broke the law, label him/her an "unlawful enemy combatant," and lock him/her away forever without providing a shred of evidence, that foundation starts to look mighty unstable. If this trend continues much further, then I'll start worrying about public schools morphing into propaganda machines. (I went through 13 years of public schooling myself, by the way.)

Depends on the kind of computer expert he is.

Okay, fair enough, but note that "The FBI interviewed al-Marri that October [2001] and arrested him in December." If you were a serious sleeper agent, wouldn't that be enough time for you to at least delete any easily-accessible evidence?
