Assuming that this analysis and others like it are correct, that is. The John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 was signed into law on the same day as the Military Commissions Act of 2006. Hidden among its provisions is language apparently designed to give the President control over states' National Guard units and allow him to use them for law enforcement, negating the restrictions against such use in an existing law called the Posse Comitatus Act.
In other words, the bill makes it easier to declare martial law, bringing us that much closer to becoming a bona fide police state. The power is in Bush's hands; all he needs now is an excuse to use it.
